Understanding Visas

Japan's SSW visa allows work in labor-shortage industries, with SSW-1 being temporary and SSW-2 leading to residency. TITP is a training program for skill development, not a work visa.

1. TITP (Technical Intern Training Program)

Purpose:

To facilitate the transfer of skills, technologies, and knowledge to individuals from developing countries, contributing to international cooperation and development.

Target Group:

Entry-level candidates seeking practical, hands-on training in various sectors.

Duration:

1 to 5 years (standard program lasts 3 years, extendable to 5 years).

Applicable Sectors:

Agriculture, construction, manufacturing, caregiving, and other labor-intensive industries.

Eligibility Requirements:

- Basic proficiency in Japanese (JLPT N5 or N4 recommended) - Medical and police clearance certificates

Key Feature:

This is a training-focused program, not intended for long-term employment or settlement. Participants are expected to return to their home country upon completion of the program

2. SSW (Specified Skilled Worker)

Purpose:

To address labor shortages in Japan by hiring semi-skilled foreign workers with relevant expertise

Visa Categories:

- SSW-1: Valid up to 5 years; does not permit dependents. - SSW-2: Renewable, long-term visa; allows dependent family members (available for select industries).

Eligible Sectors (12):

Includes caregiving (kaigo), food service, agriculture, hospitality, construction, shipbuilding, and others.

Eligibility Requirements:

- Pass the JFT-Basic or JLPT N4 or higher (Japanese language proficiency) - Pass the designated Skills Proficiency Test in the chosen industry - Health check, valid passport, and a confirmed employment contract

Key Feature:

Offers direct employment with competitive wages and better worker rights compared to the TITP. Often viewed as a pathway for longer-term residence and career development in Japan.

3. Engineer / Specialist in Humanities / International Services

Purpose:

Designed for qualified professionals working in specialized and international fields.

Applicable Fields:

- Engineer: IT, mechanical, civil, electrical, etc. - Humanities: Legal, HR, economics, marketing, etc. - International Services: Interpreting, translation, language instruction, international PR, etc.

Eligibility Requirements:

- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent academic qualification, or at least 10 years of relevant work experience - Valid employment offer from a registered Japanese company - Japanese language proficiency is not mandatory, though JLPT N3 or higher is beneficial

Visa Duration:

1, 3, or 5 years — all renewable

Key Feature:

Provides a stable path toward long-term stay, with the potential to apply for permanent residency in the future.
